A Celebration of Life honoring Shirley Burger will be held Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 11 am at the United Methodist Church in Ainsworth, NE. Shirley passed away at the Sandhills Care Center in Ainsworth, Nebraska on December 2, 2021, at the age of 93. A private family graveside service was held on Monday, December 6, 2021.
Shirley Ann Beebout was born December 26, 1927, to LeRoy and Rosa (Akert) Beebout in Johnstown, Nebraska where her father was the owner and editor of the Johnstown Enterprise. She was the seventh of the eight children.
On June 2, 1946, Shirley married Duane Burger. To this union five children were born: Renee, Monte, Jan, Lori and Kim. Family was extremely important to Shirley, and she loved all family gatherings and holidays. She loved her children and especially being a grandmother and great-grandmother.
Shirley attended school in Johnstown through the 11th grade. She graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1945. Shirley worked as a telephone switchboard operator after high school. She also worked as a secretary/receptionist at ESU #17 until her retirement. Shirley and Duane owned the Ainsworth Variety Store for many years.
Shirley was a lifetime member of the Ainsworth and Johnstown United Methodist Churches. She placed her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior many years ago. Shirley and Duane enjoyed many long-term friendships as members of a card club that met for over 50 years. She was a member of Does Drove #54 and a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit #79. She helped organize the alumni activities for many of her AHS Class of ‘45 reunions. Shirley was a member of Home Band, an organization that supported the Nebraska Children’s Home and a member of the Brown County Hospital Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Duane; her parents; parents-in-law, Pete and Mildred Burger; sisters, Lois Beebout, Ardis Johnson, and Leona Morrow; brothers, Willard Beebout, Allan Beebout, Merlin (Turk) Beebout, and William (Pooch) Beebout; brothers-in-law, Wayne Johnson, Eldon Morrow, and Douglas Burger; sisters-in-law, Jeanne Beebout, Jeree Beebout, and Patricia Burger; and son-in-law, Jim Adlisson. She is survived by her children Renee Adkisson of Omaha NE, Monte (Cindy) Burger of Aurora NE, Jan (Keith) Rodehorst of Kearney NE, Lori (Jim) Baker of Ainsworth NE, and Kim (Gary) Trobee of Colorado Springs CO; nine grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Patricia Beebout, Lincoln NE along with nieces, nephews and many other family members.
