John Theodore Appleman was born to Theodore E. and Marian M. (Feagin) Appleman on April 27, 1934 at the Wood Lake (NE) Post Office. He passed away at his home north of Johnstown, NE on July 24, 2026 at the age of 92.
John married Verna R. Kienke on May 15, 1954 in Burke, SD. To this union four children were born: Loren (Laurel) of Johnstown, Lana (Gary) Hauck of Utica, SD, Lila DeRaad of Johnstown and Leonard (Kim) of Johnstown.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Verna; three granddaughters; two great-grandsons; one sister, Barbara (Harry) Pederson and brothers-in-law Tom Black and Wayne Major.
He is survived by his four children; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Robert (Wilma) Appleman of Johnstown; two sisters, Linda Black of West Point, NE and Wanda Major of Laramie, WY as well as, nieces, nephews other family members and friends.
Funeral Service was held on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at the Hoch Funeral Home in Ainsworth. Richard Gasser, Eric Sterling, Jon MacDonald and Christina Creech officiated at the event. Music was provided by Sarah Chafee with the congregation singing “Was It For Me?” and “A Hand Held Out.” The cemetery selection was “Songs of Zion.” The obituary and special remarks were given by Shawna Major. Casketbearers were: John’s Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. Memorials were suggested to the Ainsworth Senior Center in John’s name. Interment was in the Ainsworth Cemetery.
