DeLane Robert May, 89, passed away April 29, 2026 at the Rock County Hospital Long-Term Care in Bassett, NE. He was the oldest child of William H. and Rose V. (Sandall) May, born November 20, 1936 in Bassett. He was later joined by his sister, Joyce and brother, Larry to complete the family. DeLane loved this area and lived his entire life in Rock County. He continued the family love of ranching, as his grandparents and parents were also lifelong residents.
DeLane loved to fly fish. One of his favorite outings was catching trout in Pine Creek with his brother, Larry. They would then cook what they caught, frying them over a camp stove. He was also an avid deer hunter, even into his mid-eighties.
DeLane loved raising Hereford cattle, building a good herd. As time went on, he began raising Red Angus as well.
DeLane loved his family, and Glen and Leann, his nephew and niece were special blessings in his life. He thoroughly enjoyed teaching them about cattle and working with them in the hayfield. However, after DeLane no longer wanted to ride the tractor all day, he would work with his brother at May’s Repair. Technically still “haying,” he rebuilt many Kosch mower triangles.
DeLane had made a lot of good memories and enjoyed every one of them to his last day. He entered Rock County Hospital, and was moved into Long-Term Care for the last two weeks of his life.
DeLane was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; sister, Joyce; and brother, Larry. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Linda May of Bassett; nephew, Glen (Charla) May of Bassett; niece, Leann (Justin) May-Burr of Elkhorn, NE; along with other family members.
A Graveside Service was held on Monday, May 4, 2026 in the Bassett Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Dennis Quigley officiating.
