OBITUARY OF
EILEEN M. HAUGEN
Eileen M. Haugen, age 94, passed away October 9, 2022 at Rock County Long Term Care in Bassett, Nebraska. Eileen was born in Faulkton, South Dakota on September 2, 1928 to Walter and Phoeba Wehler. She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn Haugen, father Walter, mother Phoeba, brother Edward, and adoptive mother Edna (Wehler) Kaiser. She is survived by her brother Herbert Kaiser; four daughters Linda Coulter (Sam), Nancy Baker (Gary), Betty Gilg (Doug), and Bonny DeWeese (Ted); along with nine grandchildren Jeremy Arnholt, Jamison Arnholt, Chris Coulter, Brad Baker, Travis Baker, Brady Gilg, Justin Gilg, Alex DeWeese, and Tate DeWeese, and three great-grandchildren MacKinzie, Micah, and Kylee.
After her father’s untimely death, Eileen was adopted by her aunt Edna and assisted raising her brother and sister on a ranch in Custer County, South Dakota. Eileen graduated high school from Rapid City Central High and attended nursing school in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She subsequently moved to Nebraska to assist her aunt Hilda and Cliff Taylor with raising their two sons. Their residence was directly south of the Niobrara River ranch owned by Francis and Sadie Haugen. One evening she attended a dance at the community hall where a handsome blonde-haired blue-eyed gentleman named Glenn Haugen caught her eye and she very discreetly "winked" at him. Not to lose out on this opportunity, Glenn asked the young lady to dance and that was the beginning of their life together.
Glenn and Eileen were married on October 17, 1953 in Rapid City, South Dakota and made their home on the Haugen ranch north of Newport where they raised their four daughters. Eileen would find joy sewing in her spare time. She lovingly pieced together numerous quilts, made from the fabric scraps that she saved from years of making handmade dresses for her daughters, and western shirts for Glenn. These quilts are cherished by her family.
A Private Family Committal Service was held in the Simpson Cemetery north of Newport on Thursday, May 11, 2023. Memorials were suggested to Rock County Long Term Care and mailed to the family at PO Box 36, Bassett, NE 68714 Hoch Funeral Home of Bassett was in charge of arrangements and online condolences may be made to the family at www.hochfuneralhome.com .
