Carroll Eugene "Gene" Turpin

September 21, 1948 — July 27, 2022

Carroll Eugene Turpin was born September 21, 1948 at Valentine, Nebraska to Harold Clinton and Rose C. (Koralewski) Turpin. He died July 27, 2022 at the Rock County Hospital in Bassett, Nebraska at the age of 73 years. “Gene” was raised in rural Rock County. Growing up, he helped his dad on the farm. He graduated from Rock County High School in 1967. Following school, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in Viet Nam. He was honorably discharged in 1971, receiving numerous decorations and medals to include the Silver Star Medal, as well as, three Bronze Service Stars. He was a member of the Bassett American Legion Club. Gene met Kathy Ohde. They were married in October of 1971 in Atkinson, Nebraska. To this union two children were born, Jamie and Shandra. Gene enjoyed when his kids and their friends hung at the house. From soapbox derby cars, mud pies, target practice and prom hair styles—Gene loved it all! Throughout his working years, he was employed in farming, ranching and working at the Co-op. Then he started his own fencing business. Gene spent over 20 years building perfectly straight fences. In later years, he truly loved spending time raising his cattle. More recently, he had dabbled into woodworking.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jim Turpin; his in-laws, Chuck and Madeline Ohde; and a sister-in-law, Barb Ohde. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; and son, Jamie and wife, Carol, all of Bassett; daughter, Shandra Kurpgeweit and husband, Chris of Leigh, NE, granddaughters, Amber Zoucha and husband, Dominic of Genoa, NE, Jamie Waller and husband, Trefer of O’Neill, NE, Paige Kurpgeweit of Leigh; great-grandkids, Beau and Caylyn Zoucha of Genoa; brother, Ken Turpin and wife, Milinda of Newport, NE; sister-in-law, Monica Turpin of Bassett; brother-in-law, Steve Ohde and wife, Carrie of Wolbach, NE; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.
In his younger years, Gene, Ken and Jim made lots of memories hunting, playing marbles and card games. Gene always loved to shuffle up a deck of cards and play 13-point pitch. When the cards weren’t falling just right, he could often be heard saying, “It’s time to go home.” And he could be sitting at his very own kitchen table. As he rests peacefully now….”it was time to go home.”

Funeral Service was held on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Bassett with Vicar Nancy Moore officiating at the service. Music was provided by Faye Smith with the congregation singing “How Great Thou Art” and Paige Kurpgeweit singing “The Old Rugged Cross.” The obituary was read by Dakota Andrews. Casket Bearers were: Chris Kurpgeweit, Dominic Zoucha, Trefer Waller, Steve Ohde, Adam Turpin and Cory Turpin. Honorary Casket Bearers were: All of Gene’s Other Family and Friends. Memorials were suggested to the Rock County High School Foundation Scholarship Fund in Gene’s name. Interment was in the Willowdale Cemetery near Newport with Military Honors by Bassett American Legion Post #123. Hoch Funeral Home of Bassett was entrusted with the arrangements.
